Roundball Summer League WrapUp

WESTERN UNION - 2014 ROUNDBALL
SUMMER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!

Western Union wrapped up the Roundball Summer League in dominating fashion by winning their championship game against the Pinetree Blazers 88 - 44. Western Union came out of the gates swinging, by playing high intensity offense and defense. Their efforts led them to a 19 - 4 lead within the first five minutes of game play. From that point on, there was no stopping to their stellar performance as they never let up throughout the remainder of the game. Congratulations to a group of guys that play some of the best team based basketball our league has yet to see. We look forward to their defense of their title in future seasons to come. Well Deserved Western Union! It was truly a team effort!

The Roundball Finals MVP honours went to David Grobelski who knocked down a number of early three pointers in the first half. His shooting led him to a 19 point, double double performance with 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. In addition to Western Union's Championship performance, we crowned three individual award recipients who each had spectacular regular season performances.

Branden Dosanjh - Top Scorer
Gino Coronado - Top Defensive Player
Branden Dosanjh took home the Regular Season Top Scorer honours, averaging just over 19 points per game. He played a significant role in helping his team push its way into the playoffs. Branden had two outstanding 40 plus point outings over the regular season.

Gino Coronado was awarded the Roundball 2014 Top Defensive player honours. His leadership on the defensive end of the floor was an on-going threat over the course of the regular season. Not only did he easily lead the league in steals with over three plus steals per game, but his overall hustle, pressure defense and defensive awareness proved to shut down some of the top scorers in the league. It's popularly said that "defense wins championships" and Gino's stellar play was a clear testament of such a statement.

Mike Chen - Most Valuable Player
Lastly, Roundball Most Valuable Player honours was awarded to the Rec-IT team captain Mike Chen. Mike was a league leader in four of five statistical categories and was a defining reason why his team finished the regular season in second place with a 6-2 winning record. Throughout the season, Mike proved to switch up his style of play adjusting according to the needs of his team. Mike was most often a scoring threat but easily showed the ability to become a team facilitator, often easily setting up his teammates with perfect looks to the basket. Rec-IT fought through a number of nail biting close games, with Mike closing out a majority of the games with tremendously clutch shooting, passing and game winning shots.
