The Rise of a New City
  ROUNDBALL VANCOUVER

Roundball Basketball is proud to present a new league to the city of Vancouver British Columbia. This has been a long awaited program, but we feel we have all the right pieces in place to make the expansion into this new city a definite success. The league is scheduled to be at 10th Avenue Alliance Church at a roof top Gymnasium.  The league will be a 4 on 4 style league, which is the first of this format for Roundball. We are excited for this upcoming program and know it is going to be a competitive, high intensity league. Roundball will also be holding a 4 on 4 tournament in late November to promote the new league. Partial proceeds from this program will be going to help fund a free after school program for youth put on by 10th Avenue Alliance entitled Livewire. We are happy to contribute to the community by helping youth stay off the streets and in more positive social environments.  Stay connected with Roundball through facebook @ roundballhoopz and twitter @roundballbc and continue to spread the word as we anticipate this new exciting venture into Vancouver BC.

A Couple Dudes Win The Roundball Championship!!!

Congratulations to A Couple Dude's the new Surrey 2011 Roundball Champions. Wednesday marked an incredible finals match between the top two contending teams in the Surrey program. In the end the score was settled with the game coming down to clutch free throw shooting and strong team unity exhibited by team A Couple Dudes. Special mention goes out to the fantastic four of the team that has kept this group of men pushing towards a championship victory since day one.

Captain Mark Williams leadership and competitive mind set, and allstar performing year has helped the team regroup and stay focused throughout the course of the finals as well as their great season. Kris Mcmurray's stellar point guard presence has been consistent and effective at all levels. His well rounded skill and shooting ability has helped the team in crucial moments throughout the season. Adding to this, big man Cody Sim has proven his dominance on the defensive end of the floor. He not only took home the leagues Defensive Player Award but also commanded the defense in the finals playing a key role in helping his team solidify the championship title. A final mention goes out to none other than Sam Zhang's MVP performance during both the regular season and playoffs. Sam took home well deserved honours as the MVP of the regular season, the scoring champion title, MVP of the finals as well as Allstar Game MVP.

Roundball is proud to again to present  this Championship Title to a group of humble, team driven and talented young men, three qualities that are hard to come by now adays. Congrats A Couple Dudes!

Blazers Article

Blazers No Doubt Watching The Throne

Usually atleast a half hour before a Pinetree Blazers game you will often see stars Michael Bains and Prince Lal come through the gym with a pumped attitude ready to get to work. Michael always carrying his game ball and Prince often wearing a different vintage NBA Jersey before each warm up session. The Blazers are always ready to go early, joking around on the bench before games and playing their pump up music on the sidelines. Pine Tree Blazers Originator Andy Gill is always smiles lacing up some new j's while bobbing his head to the beats in his ear...So What's the point of all the hype? The point is for the past two seasons the Blazers have always entered the building ready to have fun, but are known to keep it Straight Business come tip off time.

This week was no different, The Pinetree Blazers came out firing and never stopped. They shut down the top team in the league and ended team Space Jam's undefeated season in a heartbeat. Damage was done by Captain Michael Bains on the inside cutting to the basket with ease throughout the course of the second half, and last years top scorer Prince Lal ended the first half with 19 big points. 12 of which came from 3 point territory. The game ended with all fine tuned sectors of the Blazers team in tact. Michael and Prince leading the way, accompanied by a stellar point guard performance by Paul Bains who finished with a double double leading all roundballers with 10 assists throughout the course of the night. Not to mention Andy Gill also hitting a couple big clutch jumpers from inside the key area towards the end of the first and second half's.

So what are we left with you ask? We are left with a team that so far has only lost for two reasons. One was a disqualification, and the other was a stolen game in the last minute of play..... Pretty Good considering the Pinetree Blazers lost a tough Finals Match last year and have definitely come prepared this year to take whats rightfully theres....The Roundball Championship.... That's if A Couple of Dudes and SpaceJam have anything to say about that. We are winding down to what will be a great Roundball Basketball Playoff Finish.

The leagues leading scorer notched 50 big points in the victory (24 of which came from 3 point territory) Sam also took home this years 3 point title, edging out last seasons Roundball MVP Andrew Sors.

Take a look at some of his Allstar game highlights in the mvp compilation video below. Congrats again Sam!

Roundball Game Recap - Week of July 20th

A Couple Dudes Defeat TML
60 - 54

In the beginning of the game TML's Karmal exploded for 6 quick points to lead all players in points within the first 10 minutes of the game. His team led midway through the first by a score of 19 - 13, however things were soon to change as the game progressed. With four minutes left in the half  the outside shooting of Sam Zhang and inside play of Mark Williams began to bring their squad back to where they belonged on the scoreboard. Sam Zhang ended the half with a buzzer beating 3 pointer that tied the game at 30 - 30 at halftime.

Strong play by forward Gurminder kept team TML in the game in the second half. He was able to hit two crucial back to back three pointers and lead all players in rebounds with 12, doing his best to keep his team in the ball game. However with 5 minutes left in the game A Couple Dudes began to do what they do best in the clutch moments of the game. Just as they stole a nail biter last week from the Pinetree Blazers, they began to pull away from TML in the last stretch of the game.

Player of the Game - Sam Zhang 28 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists

Space Jam Defeat Up In Smoke
74 - 60

Up and Smoke came out strong in the start of the game with their run and gun style leading the way with a 6 to zero margin, only to have Andrew Sors knock down two back to back threes to even out the game. From that point on last seasons MVP Sors continued to knock down shots putting team Up In Smoke in a hard place to regain confidence and make a push to catch up. Efforts from Pinder in the first half helped his team tie the game at 21 at one point, however that was the closest his team would come to beating the undefeated Space Jam squad. At the 5 minute mark team Space Jam's Brandon had the play of the game by stealing the ball at half court, running down the floor and fiercely dunking the ball on an Up In Smoke guard ( who's name we will keep confidential for dignity purposes)

The second half was dominated by Space Jam with great inside ball movement from Ryan, Chris and Andrew. Baskets began to come easy with each run down the court. Space Jam ended the game improving their record to an undefeated 4 - 0 We look forward to their match up on August 10th when they will play the Pinetree Blazers, which we expect to be their toughest game of the season.

Player of the Game - Andrew Sors 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists

ABC Defeat Pinetree Blazers
By Forfeit Victory

Midway through this game, a Pinetree Blazer player was hit with two technical fouls for inappropriate physical aggression and instigating a fight and was ejected from the game. This left the Pinetree Blazers with only 4 players active, therefore forcing them to forfeit their game for the night.

Roundball would like to remind all players that we will not tolerate any violence or any threats made on other players or staff. This is a strictly enforced policy that has been addressed in the code of conduct waiver forms signed by all players. Please adhere to the zero tolerance policy and respect it at all times.

REMINDER - No Games will take Place Wednesday July 27th - Please refer to your Schedule.

AUGUST 3rd - All star team's and competition details will be posted in the coming days.

Game of the Night

    * *A HEATED GAME OF THE NIGHT*

The last game of the night was yet again a heated one. It's expected that there would be some anger and controversy any time two of the top teams in the league compete. The Grizzly Bears ended up edging out team Strictly Business in the final seconds of the game. We expect more from these teams as they are scheduled to play each other one more time before the end of the season.

As a reminder, players are expected to please respect the rules of the Roundball program. All players have signed a waiver form stating they have agreed with the associated risks in playing in the Roundball program. This means that "you agree" to any of the risks associated with the calls made or not made by Roundball referees. There should not be any severe complaints about reffing because all players have been notified of our referee details on the first night and have signed waiver forms agreeing to these details. If players do not agree with any of the risks associated with Roundball then please do not register into the program and sign these waiver forms in the first place. This is a very basic concept that seems to have been forgotten. Roundball is a community program which like many other community program's across Greater Vancouver only has one definite referee.

We continue to expect many more heated battles to come, and are please to see the competitive nature of the Roundball program consistently rising. If players do have any particular concerns please do not hesitate to contact us in a professional manor and we will do our best to accomodate to your needs. We have had many close games and are excited to see how the rest of the season turns out.

Roundball's Top 5 Basketball Movies

On Screen Best of The Best

5. BLUE CHIPS

I'm sure your thinking..."what the hell is Blue Chips?"  Well the movie Blue chips is one of the most under rated basketball movies of all time. Not only is it extremely exciting from start to finish but it stars athletes Shaquelle Oneal and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway in their early years. This is a great film and is about a college coach who aspires to help his team win the championship. He goes to wits end to recruit some of the top players across the state. Check it out...you wont find it in movie stores so dont bother looking there.

4. MORE THAN A GAME

How could a Lebron James film not make the cut? This movie is part of the top 5 because it is just incredibly epic. I don't know if many of you remember how much hype there was surrounding Lebron James when he was in Highschool and about to enter the NBA. He was doing 360 dunks in games and destroying every team that played him. He caught the attention of colleges that tried giving him car's as gifts and of Kobe who also gave him a free pair of  his signed Team USA basketball shoes. This documentary breaks down the final year where Lebron took his highschool team to the championship. Its a journey to watch because it also documents the lives of his teammates and their struggles throughout this epic process to championship stardom.

3.  KOBE DOIN' WORK

OMG this movie is amazing, and only the true basketball fan's will be able to watch it from start to finish. Why is it so great? because it is both the in game sounds and play by play commentary of today's best player in the game Kobe Bryant. Michael Jordan once said basketball is a game that is 20% skill and 80% mental.  This whole film covers the mental aspect of what MJ was talking about. Learn how to lead like Kobe, listen to how he prepares, listen to what he's thinking when hes running down the court with the ball. This movie is a MUST see. Spike Lee produced and directed this film and the concept behind it clearly proves that Spike is a genius. Kobe talks us through his thoughts and in game comments of a pivotal game against the San Antonio Spurs.

2. MICHAEL JORDAN TO THE MAX

All I have to say is Greatest Of All Time. This Michael Jordan film is the best one out simply because it depicts his life in segments while still taking us throught Mj's final playoff journey to his 6th and final NBA title. The way this film is shot is incredible because the camera angles and sounds are very live. The editors of the film have designed it so the sounds are keyed in on the live floor. Not only this but from the viewers perspective we are able to see how Mike deals with adversity and triumph both on and off the court. The film looks at Mike's journey to the 1998 championship and also takes us through segments of his life. Show this to your kid's and make sure they show it to their kid's.

1. HOOP DREAMS

If you're like huh? right now then you better go find this movie and watch it. This movie has been deemed as legendary over the course of the past ten years. If you do some of your own personal research on the best basketball movies, then Hoop Dreams will almost all the time be on the top of the list. Hoop Dreams is legendary because it not only has great basketball but it depicts the struggles of two men both on and off the court. It speaks on issues surrounding both political struggle and economical struggle and is sure to catch the hearts and interests of its viewers. Ton's of rappers have mentioned this movie in their lyrics and avid movie critics have deemed it one of the best sports films ever.

Alot of you are thinking well I dont agree, well let us put it this way. If you were looking for one of those Hollywood based stories to make this cut then you were looking in the wrong top five to begin with.

Notable Mentions:

Here are a few strong basketball movies that didnt make it and here is why. He Got Game is one of my personal favourites. But not for the basketball...for Denzel. the basketball was alright and Ray Allen is the bomb but this was more of an off court story not a ball movie. Spike Lee produced and directed this one too and if your looking for a good ball movie with the greatest actor ever then check out He Got Game.

The movie "Hoosiers" didnt make the cut because its a little too oldschool and the basketball is really weak. Hollywood really thinks this is the best basketball movie ever. Roundball thinks thats pathetic. However check it out if your a hollywood, two thumbs up kind of basketball fan.

ok, ok so the movie "Hooked, The Legend of Demetrius Hook Mitchell" definitely should have made the cut! This would be a strong argument for sure. Why ? because this movie is about a street legend who completely dominated other nba greats on the street courts. Testimonies from players such as Gary Payton and Jason Kidd explain that hook was better than all of them and would of been an amazing NBA star. Unfortunitely Hook ended up serving his prime years in prison and the drug life shattered his hoop dreams.

Wesley Snipes ! Yea White Man Can't Jump is a classic too, but again only because of the acting performance and not because of the basketball. The basketball is TERRIBLE! Another basketball movie that has a good story but horrible ball is Above The Rim with none other than Tupac Shakur. Tupac is so hood in the movie, lol but yet again the actual basketball in this movie is an embarrasment to the sport. Everyone knows Marlon Waynes can't play no ball.

Lastly movies such as "Coach Carter, The Basketball Diary and Love and Basketball" are lame and corny and your a loser if you thought they could even touch the status of these other films. We're talking about real basketball films.

So there you have it Roundballers, All the movies mentioned are must watch movies so we suggest you watch them when you have time.

Roundball.

The Kobe Bryant Workout Plan

For those of you Roundballers who are looking to seriously step up your game, we thought we might show you what the best player in the league does on a daily basis. We challenge the serious ballers to do half of Kobe's workout. This was provided by a Lakers personal trainer who posted it online. Check it out and Enjoy.
KOBE'S PLAN
Six days per week, Kobe Bryant does six hour workouts. Each workout consists of 2 hours of running, 2 hours of basketball, 1 hour of cardio-vascular exercise, and 1 hour of weight lifting.
RUNNING
Kobe varies his running, sometimes doing sprints or distance on the track or cross-country field course, and sometimes running on the basketball court. For court running, he does an incredible two hours of sprints and suicides (sometimes called "gut busters"). Suicide drills build explosive strength and quick starts. A player begins at one baseline, runs and touches the foul line, then back to touch the baseline, then to half court, back, to the opposite foul line, back, and to the opposite baseline and back. Ideally, the player runs at a quick but steady pace throughout the exercise.
BASKETBALL
It's important to be able to run swiftly and tirelessly, but it won't do much good if you can't sink a shot. So, Kobe shoots between 700 and 1,000 baskets per day. While shooting, he fine-tunes his form and technique, running over each type of shot from different court positions, until he achieves perfect muscle-memory.
CARDIO
As if all that running weren't enough, Kobe Bryant also does an hour per day of cardio-vascular exercise, such as jumping rope, boxing, or other high-intensity work-outs. This keeps his heart and lungs at peak performance, and improves his stamina.
WEIGHTS
Finally, Kobe finishes his workout with one hour of weight-lifting. This is his schedule, according to the Inside Hoops forum message board:
Days 1 and 4: Bench press, lateral pull-downs, incline press, military press, and abdominal crunches.
Days 2 and 5: Lateral dumbbell raises, bar dips, triceps press-downs, bicep curls, and abdominal crunches.
Days 3 and 6: Back and front squats, leg curls, leg extensions, calf raises, and abdominal crunches.
Note that Kobe himself says that he also does clean-pulls, snatches, and Romanian dead-lifts. In any case, he spends four days per week on upper-body strength, two days on legs, and he also does crunches each day for core strength.
This is Kobe Bryant's off-season workout schedule. During the NBA season, he has to be careful not to overwork, so he dials it back... to a mere 4 hours per day on top of team practices and games!

News

News and Updates Heading Into March Break

As we head into the march break we wish our players the best as they enjoy two weeks off of the Roundball schedule. Upon return we would just like to simply remind our players of some of the guidelines that sometimes become misunderstood between players and staff.

Captains: Captains please remember to always be in contact with a Roundball coordinator when any issues arise around inability to make it to a game or issues around paying registration or jersey deposits. Last minute problems most likely will not work in your favour so please speak to us regarding all matters in advance.

Drop In Rule:  A player is only allowed to drop in once. The same drop in player must pay the registration fee if they show up a second night to play. No drop in players are allowed in the playoffs.

Jerseys: Players must have jerseys on at all times. If a team has 5 players with a jersey, the sixth player or thereafter must switch jerseys with a teammate whenever they are on a court.

Shot Clock Violation: The shot clock comes into effect when a game is close heading into the fourth quarter. Shot clock and game clocks are called out throughout the course of the last 10 minutes of the fourth so players must be aware of the details of the clock.

Respect towards Referees: Simply put, every referee misses and makes big calls, even the professionals.  Please refrain from consistently nagging at Roundball referees because no referee is interested in being bias towards any of our Roundball teams. Calls go both ways and no favoritism is ever taken. For the benefit of our players, Roundball now has acquired two referees for every game throughout the rest of the season. This always has been the most difficult job in all of sporting so please recognize and respect our team of reffs.

Ron Calizon has been reffing for Roundball for four consecutive years and also has experience reffing for other recreational programs. And newly aquired Payton Waywhite has experience reffing for both the highschool and elementary school districts in Richmond and we are glad to have his experience further benefit our program.

If anyone has any questions or concerns regarding these details please do not hesistate to speak to a Roundball coordinator.

Best of luck throughout the rest of the season,

Roundball Basketball

Article on "Those Guys"

           No Pain.... No Gain
The youngest Roundball Men's team was able to break through with their first win this week. The team had a spread out effort led by guard and Captain Andy who was about one assist shy of the first Richmond men's league triple double. Along with his performance came a strong effort from guard Kasra who despite a sprained ankle was able to push his body to the limit scoring over a dozen points and giving out 7 assists. Other notable mentions from team "Those Guys" was the post play of power forward Arsha as well as a 21 point performance by Miles who was the leading scorer of Game 3. The cast of this young team will serve as an exciting group of boys to watch. Although this season may not be a championship type of year for the youthful team, we expect the Cambie known squad to be a threat in more seasons to come.
