Game of the Night

    * *A HEATED GAME OF THE NIGHT*

The last game of the night was yet again a heated one. It's expected that there would be some anger and controversy any time two of the top teams in the league compete. The Grizzly Bears ended up edging out team Strictly Business in the final seconds of the game. We expect more from these teams as they are scheduled to play each other one more time before the end of the season.

As a reminder, players are expected to please respect the rules of the Roundball program. All players have signed a waiver form stating they have agreed with the associated risks in playing in the Roundball program. This means that "you agree" to any of the risks associated with the calls made or not made by Roundball referees. There should not be any severe complaints about reffing because all players have been notified of our referee details on the first night and have signed waiver forms agreeing to these details. If players do not agree with any of the risks associated with Roundball then please do not register into the program and sign these waiver forms in the first place. This is a very basic concept that seems to have been forgotten. Roundball is a community program which like many other community program's across Greater Vancouver only has one definite referee.

We continue to expect many more heated battles to come, and are please to see the competitive nature of the Roundball program consistently rising. If players do have any particular concerns please do not hesitate to contact us in a professional manor and we will do our best to accomodate to your needs. We have had many close games and are excited to see how the rest of the season turns out.

Roundball's Top 5 Basketball Movies

On Screen Best of The Best

5. BLUE CHIPS

I'm sure your thinking..."what the hell is Blue Chips?"  Well the movie Blue chips is one of the most under rated basketball movies of all time. Not only is it extremely exciting from start to finish but it stars athletes Shaquelle Oneal and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway in their early years. This is a great film and is about a college coach who aspires to help his team win the championship. He goes to wits end to recruit some of the top players across the state. Check it out...you wont find it in movie stores so dont bother looking there.

4. MORE THAN A GAME

How could a Lebron James film not make the cut? This movie is part of the top 5 because it is just incredibly epic. I don't know if many of you remember how much hype there was surrounding Lebron James when he was in Highschool and about to enter the NBA. He was doing 360 dunks in games and destroying every team that played him. He caught the attention of colleges that tried giving him car's as gifts and of Kobe who also gave him a free pair of  his signed Team USA basketball shoes. This documentary breaks down the final year where Lebron took his highschool team to the championship. Its a journey to watch because it also documents the lives of his teammates and their struggles throughout this epic process to championship stardom.

3.  KOBE DOIN' WORK

OMG this movie is amazing, and only the true basketball fan's will be able to watch it from start to finish. Why is it so great? because it is both the in game sounds and play by play commentary of today's best player in the game Kobe Bryant. Michael Jordan once said basketball is a game that is 20% skill and 80% mental.  This whole film covers the mental aspect of what MJ was talking about. Learn how to lead like Kobe, listen to how he prepares, listen to what he's thinking when hes running down the court with the ball. This movie is a MUST see. Spike Lee produced and directed this film and the concept behind it clearly proves that Spike is a genius. Kobe talks us through his thoughts and in game comments of a pivotal game against the San Antonio Spurs.

2. MICHAEL JORDAN TO THE MAX

All I have to say is Greatest Of All Time. This Michael Jordan film is the best one out simply because it depicts his life in segments while still taking us throught Mj's final playoff journey to his 6th and final NBA title. The way this film is shot is incredible because the camera angles and sounds are very live. The editors of the film have designed it so the sounds are keyed in on the live floor. Not only this but from the viewers perspective we are able to see how Mike deals with adversity and triumph both on and off the court. The film looks at Mike's journey to the 1998 championship and also takes us through segments of his life. Show this to your kid's and make sure they show it to their kid's.

1. HOOP DREAMS

If you're like huh? right now then you better go find this movie and watch it. This movie has been deemed as legendary over the course of the past ten years. If you do some of your own personal research on the best basketball movies, then Hoop Dreams will almost all the time be on the top of the list. Hoop Dreams is legendary because it not only has great basketball but it depicts the struggles of two men both on and off the court. It speaks on issues surrounding both political struggle and economical struggle and is sure to catch the hearts and interests of its viewers. Ton's of rappers have mentioned this movie in their lyrics and avid movie critics have deemed it one of the best sports films ever.

Alot of you are thinking well I dont agree, well let us put it this way. If you were looking for one of those Hollywood based stories to make this cut then you were looking in the wrong top five to begin with.

Notable Mentions:

Here are a few strong basketball movies that didnt make it and here is why. He Got Game is one of my personal favourites. But not for the basketball...for Denzel. the basketball was alright and Ray Allen is the bomb but this was more of an off court story not a ball movie. Spike Lee produced and directed this one too and if your looking for a good ball movie with the greatest actor ever then check out He Got Game.

The movie "Hoosiers" didnt make the cut because its a little too oldschool and the basketball is really weak. Hollywood really thinks this is the best basketball movie ever. Roundball thinks thats pathetic. However check it out if your a hollywood, two thumbs up kind of basketball fan.

ok, ok so the movie "Hooked, The Legend of Demetrius Hook Mitchell" definitely should have made the cut! This would be a strong argument for sure. Why ? because this movie is about a street legend who completely dominated other nba greats on the street courts. Testimonies from players such as Gary Payton and Jason Kidd explain that hook was better than all of them and would of been an amazing NBA star. Unfortunitely Hook ended up serving his prime years in prison and the drug life shattered his hoop dreams.

Wesley Snipes ! Yea White Man Can't Jump is a classic too, but again only because of the acting performance and not because of the basketball. The basketball is TERRIBLE! Another basketball movie that has a good story but horrible ball is Above The Rim with none other than Tupac Shakur. Tupac is so hood in the movie, lol but yet again the actual basketball in this movie is an embarrasment to the sport. Everyone knows Marlon Waynes can't play no ball.

Lastly movies such as "Coach Carter, The Basketball Diary and Love and Basketball" are lame and corny and your a loser if you thought they could even touch the status of these other films. We're talking about real basketball films.

So there you have it Roundballers, All the movies mentioned are must watch movies so we suggest you watch them when you have time.
